The Shield of Soren EXCERPT

With a loud clang of metal slamming into metal, the final bolt was undone. Reign slowly pulled the door open, and Vincent found his breath catching in his throat.

High-pitched whimpering came from the tiny bundle of rags cowering at the back of the cage. Her long silver hair parted for a moment and Vincent could see her wide, silver eyes, terrified and innocent. Vincent’s skin prickled with discomfort. He hoped that Reign had a damned good reason for capturing a small child like this.

Beside the glass cage were two oil lamps, both resting unlit. Reign reached up and took one down. Then, in a single savage moment, he slammed the lamp onto the floor of her cage. The girl screamed in terror and covered her head with her hands, but he hadn’t been aiming for her.

The shattered glass gave way to a stream of oil that spread out in a pool across the floor. This seemed to scare the girl even more, and she began to cry quietly, sobbing into her clenched hands.

Reign looked back at Vincent. Excitement flashed in his eyes as he drew a match from a box in his pocket. A small flare of light, a flicker of sulphur and a small flame danced on top of the match. With another laugh, Reign tossed the match into the glass cage.

Vincent gasped as the oil ignited in a rush of intense heat. The entire floor of the cage burst into flames. Vincent tried to rush forwards to save the girl from a fiery death, but the heat was too intense. A hand tapped incessantly at his shoulder, and he tried to brush it away, but Reign grabbed hold of his hand.

“Look! Look!” Reign shouted excitedly, pointing at the cage.

When his eyes fell upon the cage, Vincent froze to the spot, his eyes nearly popping from their sockets. “But…how?”

The girl, who Vincent had assumed would be burning in agony, was somehow floating above the flames, hovering at the top of her cage. From her back sprouted two enormous wings of the purest white feathers Vincent had ever seen. The two beautiful white fans could only just fit within the confines of the cage, and as she beat them to stay afloat they fanned the flames beneath her.

It wasn’t just her wings that dazzled Vincent with their purity. Her whole body had adopted an ethereal, almost ghostly, silver aura, her hair shimmering with radiance. She didn’t seem too frightened any more, but there was a definite hint of sadness in her gentle eyes.

Vincent studied her carefully, struggling to catch his breath, which he hadn’t realised he had been holding. “What is she?” he managed to croak.

Reign grinned and draped an arm across Vincent’s shoulder. “She, my friend, is an angel.”

First Kill by Mary Abshire

First Kill Logline

First Kill Cover

Andrew enjoys the company of women, perhaps too much. The council in heaven had enough of his sexual promiscuity and sentenced him to return to Earth to destroy demons. To make matters more difficult, if he has sex with a woman he has to stay an extra year. Without clothes, money, or food, his task seems impossible.

Emily is in a world of trouble. She leaves her family, job, and home in Chicago to start a new life. As she’s driving along a country road, she discovers a naked man lying in the middle of it. He’s incredibly built, sculpted to perfection, and blessed with a fine package south of his navel. When he asks for her help, she can’t resist.

Over the next several days, Emily’s sanity is tested. Andrew struggles to keep his hands to himself. Emily seeks the truth from Andrew while he endeavors to kill a demon. What she discovers frightens her—angels, demons, heaven and hell exist. Determined to help Emily change her future, Andrew offers her a deal. But is heaven the best eternal resting place?

Excerpt.png

The silence in the room threatened his sanity. Finding the remote near the TV, he took it and pressed the power button. The flat screen was small, but it had a better picture compared to the boxy television sets.

He kicked off his shoes before he scooted back over the mattress. The bed was bouncy and would be perfect for having sex. A shame he couldn’t make use of his resources. After propping the pillows behind him, he flipped through the channels on the TV. He found an episode of Seinfeld playing. He remembered watching the sitcom when it had first aired in 1989. The comedy always made him laugh.

Later, a show called Friends came on. The sitcom kept him entertained until his phone vibrated in his pocket. He hurried to pull it out in case it was Emily. When he finally removed the cell, he noticed a message from her on the screen.

Made it back to the hotel. How are you doing?

Smiling at the wonders of modern technology, he replied, Watching Friends. It’s not bad.

He set the phone on his thigh and resumed watching the show. A minute later, a new text from her appeared.

Ick. Friends is old.

He prepared a quick response. New to me.

Her next message arrived promptly. Seriously? Don’t they have TV in heaven?

Nope, he replied.

He held the cell, waiting for her to respond.

OMG! How did you get by without TV?? What do people do without TV??

He typed his reply. There are theatres people perform in. Most people are busy with jobs, going out with friends, having sex, spending time with family, traveling, having fun, having more sex… What’s OMG?

He placed the phone on his leg. He shook his foot as the time passed. When his phone didn’t vibrate, he pressed the button to make sure he hadn’t missed anything. The screen showed the normal picture of a field of flowers. Sad she hadn’t replied, he returned his attention to the television. But after a few minutes, he couldn’t tolerate watching the show any longer. He missed talking to Emily, even if it was only by instant messaging.

He lifted the phone and sent her a new communication. What are you doing?

Boredom started to take hold of him. He left the phone on the bed and began pacing in the room. The urge to call her was like an itch he desperately needed to scratch, but he didn’t want to be a nuisance. He kept glancing at the phone, hoping it would buzz with a response from her. When it finally did, he dove over the bed to claim the cell.

Getting clothes ready for tomorrow. Heading into shower soon. OMG is oh my god. I’m stunned there’s no TV in heaven.

Her message instantly brightened his mood. He entered his reply. Who needs TV when there are better things to do? What are you going to wear tomorrow?

He placed the phone aside and then laid his head sideways on top of his arm. So she was staying busy. That was good to know. At least she hadn’t decided to leave him stranded. He’d thought she might, especially after she tried to give him several wads of cash. He didn’t want her money. It was hers to begin with. Just because he’d won it didn’t make it his. Besides, he’d rather be with her than have any amount of money.

The phone buzzed. He jerked his head up to look at the screen.

Black dress with a wide belt. Nothing fancy.

He imagined her wearing a sexy black outfit that reached above her knees and had a low neckline to reveal her cleavage. Wait a minute. He didn’t want her to wear anything sexy for the demon. If she was going to pretty herself up, it should be for him.

No need to dress to impress. Jeans will be fine, he replied.

Now, if she dressed up nice for him, Andrew would have to let his fingers explore her body, starting with her thighs. Then again, maybe he should start with her neck and drag his touch down between her breasts. The mere thought gave him a boner.

A new message arrived from her. Not taking any chances. This dirtbag needs to go.

Don’t lead him on too much, Andrew sent back to her.

Define too much. Is kissing too much? Is letting him feel me up too much? FYI, leading him is the game plan.

Andrew’s eyes widened. She had to be kidding around. God, he hoped she was. He quickly typed a response. No touching. No kissing. If he tries, walk away. No, run!

His pulse sped as he thought about the demon touching her. He’d rip the demon’s heart out. No one was allowed to lay a finger on Emily.

A new message arrived. LOL. Chillax angel baby. I’m not into demons.

He chuckled as he prepared a reply. Are you into angels? I may know someone. He’s a good guy. Hot. Well hung. I think you’d like him.

He turned onto his side and propped his head up with his balled hand. Although he wasn’t sure what LOL stood for, he guessed it wasn’t a bad thing.

LMFAO!

He stared at the letters, clueless as to what they stood for. What does that mean? Is that code for you want to bop his brains out?

After he sent the message, he tried to make up words for each letter. L could stand for let’s. M could be short for make. F could be for fun or funny. A could stand for apples and O for oranges. Let’s make funny apples and oranges. Maybe it was the latest phrase people used.

OMG I am LMFAO. Seriously!!

The Man of Cloud 9 by Adam Dreece

adamdreecebanner

5 PERSONAL MOMENTS CONNECTED TO THE MAN OF CLOUD 9 from Author Adam Dreece

5. When I worked in Silicon Valley for a Startup, we went through rounds of funding and fought for every customer. I heard a lot of people talking about their startups at the cafes, restaurants, and was regularly interviewed by many. The energy was high, the ideas sometimes ludicrous. I installed the story with that.

4. When I worked at Microsoft, I made two enemies. Both of them tried their best to have me denied a promotion. One by creating new procedures and lobbying as hard as they could for me to be denied, and the other actually was a director who went so far as to “uncheck” my promotion in the software that tracked that and managed to do it without leaving a trace. Both were vehement that I should be out. Why? Because for one, they hated that I had turned a friend’s career around, from him being ready to fire to becoming a super-star, and the other because I had been asked for my honest opinion in a meeting and I gave it to her, politely and politically wrapped but still honest. When finally confronted, both of them admitted to what they did and didn’t care. There were no consequences. I did get my promotion, but left a year or two later.I took some of this sentiment, this “it has nothing to do with you, but rather what you represent” hostility and incorporated it into my villain in the story. Moreover, I took that sense of “you are the manifestation of my imperfection” as the root of the conflict.

3. I’ve had people shut down my ideas because they didn’t want to take the time to understand them,. I adapted by learning it was better to ask for forgiveness than permission, particularly when I had been brought on to fix software projects. This idea is at the heart of Niko as a genius and inventor. He knows that few would potentially understand what he really wants, and he keeps it wrapped in layers and hidden impossibly deeply.

2. Several points in my life, I made a personal decision that was the right moral one, but it slowed my technical career. Niko faces the implications of such a moral decision, though we don’t know fully what it was until the end.

1. When I was 17 years old, I ran into the older brother of one of my best friends in the street. I asked how my friend was doing. He’d suffered a brain tumor a year before. The parents didn’t always allow my calls to pass through, they weren’t particularly fond of me because I was younger and didn’t share their ethnicity. I was told that my friend had died two months ago. It hit me like a ton of bricks. Niko suffers a loss at that age, and like me, he found purpose to help him come out of it. It gave him ruthless focus, only enough room for barely two things in his life.

In 2014, Adam Dreece stopped hoping to be an author one day. He wrote and indie published the first two installments in his young adult, steampunk meets fairy tale, series The Yellow Hoods. In 2015, when the first two books became IAN Book of the Year finalists in YA and Fantasy, he released two more in the series, as well as a novelette. Along the way, Adam has become a fixture on Twitter and Facebook for his blog articles and willingness to help other authors. He’s a frequent speaker on cons, festivals and events. He’s currently working on his first science fiction novel called The Man of Cloud 9, and has a weekly serial called The Wizard Killer. In 2016 he plans to also bring out the 5th book in The Yellow Hoods series. He currently resides in Calgary, Alberta, Canada with his wife and children. He is an active online mentor at adamdreece.com, and is a busy public speaker, panelist, and author in Canada and the Pacific Northwest.

April Bostic is a New Jersey-based, Adult Romance author who enjoys unleashing her creativity and letting her imagination run wild. Her love of romance books inspired her to become not just a reader, but also a writer. In December 2008, she self-published her first novel, a contemporary romance with a supernatural twist entitled “A Rose to the Fallen”.

Her first short story, “Right Here, Right Now”, released in January 2012, is an erotic romance with a dash of S&M. The following year, she released two more short stories: a romantic urban fantasy inspired by the Greek myth of Eros and Psyche entitled “Eros, My Love”, and a sexy romantic comedy entitled “Love Addiction”.

After five years, she released her second novel, “The Howling Heart” in August 2013, a paranormal romance that delves into the mystical world of werewolves and Norse gods. To end her busiest year in publishing, April also released her fourth short story in December 2013, a historical paranormal romance entitled “A Dark Scandal”.

author-interview

Where are you from?  I was born in Perth Amboy, NJ but grew up in Woodbridge, NJ until 6th grade when my parents divorced. Then my mother, sister, and I moved to Brick, NJ where I spent most of my teenage years. As an adult, I live in Perth Amboy again and I think it’s funny how my life has gone full-circle. I just hope I don’t die in the same town I was born.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book? I would write more about the history of Varulv, and include an epilogue which would explain what happened to Quinn after Riley and Paige left. I know many readers wanted to know more about her.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?
The Howling Heart is an adult paranormal romance about a young woman from New York City named Paige who falls in love with a young werewolf from England named Riley. They first met as children in a forest in the Colorado Rockies, and are reunited years later as adults after a tragedy in Paige’s life. They both face many obstacles that prevent them from being together and it’s not only because they’re different species. Paige wants to focus on her career, but she wants to be with Riley, too. Pack law prohibits him from abandoning it, so they have to figure out how to make their relationship work. My novel gives you a healthy dose of paranormal and romance. There’s an equal amount of both. There are twists and turns in the story, so I hope the predictability factor is low which should make for a more enjoyable reading experience. My werewolves are unique from other authors. Their existence is the result of the love between a wolf and a human during 13 century Scandinavia, and the supernatural intervention of Norse gods. The wolves are called Varulv, which is the Swedish and Danish word for ‘werewolf’. They can’t keep their human form for an extended time or if they fall asleep. The moon doesn’t affect their shifting, but a special light was placed inside of them by the gods which allows them to shift between human and wolf. They are wolves first, and humans second.

How do you overcome writer’s block?
I think you have to be really motivated and have an awesome story idea. The story has to be so great, that you can’t contain it in your mind anymore and you feel like you’ll explode if you don’t write it. That, and having the passion to write. If you don’t have passion, I think readers will be able to tell through your writing.

What was the most fun part of writing your book? I wrote The Howling Heart like I was watching a movie. I love romance movies with supernatural, fantasy, or sci-fi elements, so I think that’s why this book was fun to write. I envisioned my dream cast portraying the characters. For the some of the dialogue, I would think, “How would so-and-so look if they said this?” I’m a very visual person, so I think that’s the reason I wrote the book in the style that I did.

What was the hardest part of writing your book? I acknowledge that I have a problem with telling and not showing in my writing. I’ve been struggling with that weakness for years, but I hope to overcome it one day. I know the only way I will is to write more, but that means getting over my 3-year writer’s block.

Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?
When writing about werewolves that are mostly wolf in nature, I felt it was necessary to do some research on Canis lupus. I read about wolves and watched several nature documentaries. I learned about a female wolf’s gestational period for a very specific reason and it’s explained in the book. I read about pack hierarchy, especially because I decided there should be alphas, betas, and an omega in the Black River pack. Reading about wolves’ physical features and advantages that help them survive in the wild was important. I needed to know how a wolf behaved when it was aggressive, submissive, and playful, because it helped me when writing certain scenes. Although my wolves are essentially “super” wolves that have extraordinary abilities, I had to think about what makes them similar to normal wolves. I even looked for images displaying the variety of fur coloring across different sub-species including the extinct species. Could I write about a wolf with striped fur? Are there wolves with tawny or brown fur? Are they all gray, black, and white? Many of the things I learned about wolves were used as a foundation for my mythical werewolves. And while Varulv don’t truly exist, some aspects about them are rooted in truth.

Do you have any advice for other writers?
If you write a story, and you’re passionate about it, don’t give up on it. See it through to the end, because you’ll feel so good about yourself when you do. It’s a major accomplishment to finish a story, whether it’s a short story, novella, or novel. Don’t get discouraged by negative readers or reviews. Remember for every person who doesn’t like your work, there will be someone who does. Writing, like all forms of art, is subjective, and not everyone is going to like your work. Be brave and put yourself out there. It takes a lot of courage to be a writer or author. Don’t be afraid, because you’ll realize it’s not so scary once you do it.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
I hope they think The Howling Heart is a unique werewolf love story. If they weren’t big fans of the paranormal romance genre before, and my book just sparked their interest, I hope they finish it with the desire to read more books similar to mine. Each author tries to write their own twist to werewolf mythology, and I think it’s fun to read about different variations. It’s a myth after all, so the possibilities are endless!

Do you have an agent or publisher? How did you go about finding one? When I think about my publishing journey, it brings me back to a place I wish no aspiring author has to go through. I started by querying 52 literary agencies, but no one accepted my manuscript. Then, I queried 31 publishers that accepted unsolicited manuscripts from authors. After receiving so many rejections and unsatisfactory offers, I almost gave up and decided to just keep the story on my hard drive forever. I swore never to self-publish again, because I had such a terrible experience with my first book. But I kept querying publishers, and finally accepted a contract with Eternal Press because they published in paperback and e-book. I’m old school, and still love paperbacks more than e-books.
